What Is Pearlescent Paper?

Pearlescent paper is a decorative paper with a metallic finish that gives its surface a distinctive, subtle shimmer. The pearlescent effect is created by incorporating special pearlescent or metallic pigments into the paper pulp or by coating the surface with these pigments. Depending on the type of pigment and the manufacturing process, the paper can display anything from a soft pearly glow to a more pronounced metallic lustre.

Pearlescent paper differs from standard decorative paper through this distinctive shimmering finish. Conventional decorative papers are typically matte or satin, whereas pearlescent papers add an extra visual dimension by changing their appearance according to the angle of the light, giving them depth and elegance. The effect is more subtle than that of mirror paper, yet more refined and versatile.

Pearlescent paper may be double-sided metallic, with both sides featuring a shimmering finish, or single-sided metallic, with one glossy side and one matte side. Double-sided metallic papers are the more versatile option. Single-sided metallic papers, such as Constellation Jade, allow printing on the matte side while retaining the pearlescent effect on the outer surface.
