Types of decorative envelopes by surface finish

Decorative envelopes differ mainly in the type of paper they are made from. Each type of finish gives the envelope a different character and works well for different applications. Metallic and pearl envelopes

Sirio Pearl is the flagship collection of pearl papers from the Italian paper mill Fedrigoni. Sirio Pearl is available in weights from 110 to 300 g/m² and in a wide color range, including delicate pastels and intense, saturated shades. The colors are inspired by the world of minerals, with shades such as Ice White, Oyster Shell, Misty Rose, Aurum and Copperplate. Sirio Pearl papers have FSC certification and are produced from cellulose bleached using the ECF method. In the 110 g/m² weight, the pearl finish appears only on one side of the paper.

Majestic is a collection of metallic papers produced by the Italian paper mill Favini. The name Majestic literally means majestic and perfectly reflects the character of these unique papers. The metallic effect is achieved through a combination of pearlescent and metallic pigments, giving the surface a unique appearance that shimmers with many colors. Majestic envelopes are available in weights of 120 g/m² and 250 g/m², and the color palette includes Marble White, Candlelight Cream, Sand, Night Blue, Emporer Red, as well as classic gold and silver.

Aster Metallic is a series of pearl papers by Koehler, characterized by a smooth, double sided metallic surface. We offer Aster Metallic envelopes in 120 g/m² weight, in colors such as White, Black, Cherish and Silver. This is an excellent choice for those looking for an elegant yet affordable solution.

Galaxy and Stardream are other brands of metallic papers available in our store. Galaxy offers intense, deep colors with a clear metallic shine, while Stardream stands out with a more subtle, pearl like effect. Both series are perfect for wedding invitations, Christmas cards and exclusive business correspondence.

Smooth colored envelopes

Smooth colored envelopes are a versatile category that includes papers with a matte or satin surface, without additional textured or metallic effects. Their main advantage is a rich color palette and excellent printability.

Sirio Color is a collection of smooth, colored papers by Fedrigoni, dyed through the entire sheet. Sirio Color envelopes stand out with intense, saturated colors and a matte surface. They are available in 115 g/m² weight, in colors such as Nero, Cherry, Dark Blue, Foglia, Nude and Blu. Dyed through means that the color penetrates the entire thickness of the paper, so the envelope edges have the same shade as the surface.

Burano is an Italian brand of colored papers with vivid, intense shades. Burano envelopes are available in weights of 90 g/m² and 120 g/m², in colors such as Nero, English Green, Rosa and Luce. These papers are produced using environmentally friendly technology.

Rainbow is an economical series of colored papers available in 80 g/m² weight. We offer Rainbow envelopes in a wide range of colors marked with codes, for example R99, black, R76, green, R88, blue, and R28, red. This is a practical choice for those who need colored envelopes in larger quantities on a limited budget.

Keaykolour is a series of eco friendly colored papers in subtle, muted shades. Keaykolour envelopes in 120 g/m² weight are available in colors such as Biscuit, Sequoia, Old Rose, Matcha Tea and Pastel Pink. These papers are produced with respect for the natural environment.

Textured envelopes

EKO Kraft envelopes are natural envelopes made from brown wrapping paper. Available in 100 g/m² weight, they fit perfectly into rustic invitations and materials inspired by nature. The natural kraft color pairs beautifully with jute string, stamps and handwritten addresses.

Woodstock is a collection of eco friendly papers in subtle, natural shades. Woodstock envelopes are available in 110 g/m² weight, in colors such as Rosa and Cipria. These papers contain recycled fibers.

Materica is an innovative series of eco friendly papers with a characteristic rough surface resembling natural stone or plaster. Materica envelopes are available in original colors inspired by nature, such as Verdigris.

Crush is a unique range of papers produced with the addition of organic residues from food production, such as corn husks, nuts, citrus fruits or kiwi. This innovative process gives the papers unique speckles and a delicate texture, making each sheet one of a kind.

Transparent and semi transparent envelopes

Transparent and semi transparent envelopes are made from tracing paper or parchment paper. They partially reveal the contents, creating an effect of mystery and depth.

Golden Star is a series of envelopes made from smooth tracing paper with a delicate milky shade. Available in 110 g/m² weight, these envelopes work perfectly as an outer layer for invitations, allowing the design of the main card to show through. We offer Golden Star envelopes in a version without adhesive, BK, which allows them to be opened and closed multiple times.

Aster Tracing is a range of transparent tracing paper envelopes, available in various shades from pure white to delicate pastels.

Decorative envelope formats

Decorative envelopes are available in many standard formats suited to different applications. Choosing the right size depends on the dimensions of the contents and the planned presentation method.

C6 format, 114 × 162 mm, is one of the most popular sizes for decorative envelopes. It holds A6 cards or a quarter of a standard A4 sheet. It is perfect for invitations, greeting cards, thank you cards and place cards.

DL format, 110 × 220 mm, is an elegant, elongated format ideal for folded invitations, vouchers, tickets and prestigious business correspondence. It holds an A4 sheet folded into three parts.

B6 format, 125 × 175 mm, is slightly larger than C6 and allows invitations with additional elements, such as maps or RSVP cards, to be inserted easily.

C5 format, 162 × 229 mm, is intended for A5 documents or an A4 sheet folded in half. It is a practical choice for larger invitations, catalogs and company materials.

K4 square formats are available in sizes of 140 × 140 mm, 153 × 153 mm, 155 × 155 mm, 156 × 156 mm and 170 × 170 mm. Square envelopes stand out with an elegant, modern look and are perfect for non standard invitations.

C7 format, 82 × 114 mm, is the smallest standard format, ideal for miniature cards, business card sized tickets and small gifts.

C8 format, 58 × 100 mm, is designed for business cards and the smallest cards.

Envelope flap shapes

Decorative envelopes differ not only in format and material, but also in the shape of the closing flap, which affects the final look of the envelope.

Pointed closure, delta, is the most elegant and traditional flap shape. The flap has the form of a triangle pointing downward, giving the envelope a classic, ceremonial character. This type of closure is especially popular for wedding invitations and prestigious correspondence.

Trapezoid closure has a flap with a straight, horizontal edge. It is a more modern and practical shape that makes automatic enveloping easier and is suitable for business correspondence.

Couvertic closure is a special type of flap with rounded corners, combining elegance with modernity.

Decorative envelope closure systems

Decorative envelopes are equipped with various closure systems that affect convenience of use and the durability of the seal.

NK closure, wet sealing, is a traditional system where the adhesive layer on the flap is activated after being moistened with water. NK envelopes are economical and, when stored properly, retain their adhesive properties indefinitely. Most decorative envelopes in our store use the NK closure.

HK closure, self adhesive strip, is a more convenient solution that does not require moistening. The adhesive strip is protected with a protective film, which only needs to be removed before closing the envelope. HK envelopes retain their adhesive properties for over five years.

BK envelopes, without adhesive, do not have a factory applied closure and require adhesive tape or glue to be applied manually. This type of envelope works well when the contents are often taken out and put back in. In our offer, BK envelopes are available in the Golden Star series and in C8 format.

Decorative paper weights

Paper weight, expressed in grams per square meter, affects the stiffness, durability and overall impression made by the envelope. Decorative envelopes use much higher weights than office envelopes.

Weights of 80 to 100 g/m² are lightweight papers used in economical colored series, such as Rainbow or EKO Kraft. These envelopes are flexible and easy to fold.

Weights of 110 to 120 g/m² are standard weights for most decorative envelopes. They provide proper stiffness and an elegant look while remaining easy to handle.

Weights of 140 to 170 g/m² are premium weights used in some textured and metallic series. These envelopes are clearly stiffer and create a more exclusive impression.

Higher weights mean greater envelope stiffness, better protection of the contents and a more prestigious look, but also a higher price and potentially higher shipment weight.

Applications of decorative envelopes

Wedding invitations

Wedding invitation envelopes are the first element guests see, which is why their choice is extremely important. The most popular options are pearl envelopes in shades of white, cream and ecru, such as Sirio Pearl Ice White and Majestic Candlelight Cream, gold and silver metallic envelopes for elegant ceremonies, textured envelopes for rustic and vintage styles, and kraft paper envelopes for boho weddings. The weight should be at least 100 g/m², with 110 to 120 g/m² being optimal. A delta, pointed flap gives invitations the most ceremonial character.

First Communion and christening invitations

For First Communion invitations, pearl envelopes in pastel shades are often chosen, such as Sirio Pearl Misty Rose for girls and Sirio Pearl Aquamarine for boys. A universal choice is Majestic Candlelight Cream. Weights of 110 to 120 g/m² are optimal.

Christmas and occasional cards

Christmas cards look excellent in red envelopes, such as Sirio Color Cherry, gold envelopes, such as Aster Metallic Cherish, or classic white envelopes with a pearl shine. Valentine cards can be packed in romantic pink shades, such as Sirio Color Nude or Keaykolour Old Rose, or in intense red.

Business correspondence and vouchers

Prestigious business correspondence requires envelopes that build a professional image. DL envelopes made from white or cream paper in 120 g/m² weight, such as Olin, Lessebo or Splendorgel, are a classic choice. Gift vouchers and discount coupons become more attractive when placed in metallic or colored envelopes.

How to match an envelope to an invitation

When choosing a decorative envelope, follow several rules. First, match the envelope color and finish to the style of the invitation, pearl envelopes for elegant invitations, kraft envelopes for rustic designs and colored envelopes for modern projects. Second, choose a format with a small margin, the envelope should be a few millimeters larger than the contents on each side. Third, pay attention to the paper weight, invitations for important celebrations require envelopes with a minimum weight of 100 g/m². Fourth, consider the flap shape, a pointed closure gives a ceremonial character, while a trapezoid closure is more modern.
